Our Story
How we came to be, and where we are headed
Our Journey
Like most life journeys, determining when ours began is difficult. Everything we have experienced in life has prepared and led us to this point. However, there have been some key events that definitively moved us down the road. Understanding some of those will help you understand a bit more about us and our work at Excel Kids. We are blessed to have five of our seven children adopted, and four of those five, adopted through foster care. Dr. Artman and his wife, were great encouragement regarding the positive impact that foster care can have. Because he understood the unique challenges that our children faced, he was able to council us and recommend care professionals that would be able to provide the right therapies for our children. I admit, I was a skeptic. Therapy took a lot of time out of Jamie's schedule. However, it didn't take long to see the tremendous positive impact that the children's therapy provided. Once the epiphany happened, we had moved from asking, "Is therapy really helpful?" to asking, "How do we make this available to more children?" We struggled with that question for some time, with no real solutions. Our present work began as a dream. In the dream, children were playing and enjoying therapy without even realizing it. They were playing games on an athletic field, riding horses, enjoying the indoor facilities of a recreation center, tending small gardens to call their own, and caring for small farm animals. When we shared that vision with the children's therapists, many of them agreed to help with the effort. Many of our present board members have been instrumental in working with our children and are currently helping us move the dream from vision to reality. If you feel like this work is something you would like to support or participate in, please drop us an email. In the near future, we will formalize ways in which community members can join in. Thank you for dropping by and checking out what is happening at Excel Kids John & Jamie Guyer Our Vision Make the World a Better Place We all have ideas about how the world can be a better place. Our vision for making the world a better place involves helping the children of today reach their full potential for tomorrow. People are complex, and little people are no different. They are however, still forming. That means if they have special needs because of genetics, abuse and neglect, or trauma, we have more opportunity to help them. Our vision at Excel Kids is to provide children with special needs a place where they can go and learn how to overcome and embrace their challenges so they can become more active in the world of tomorrow. We have learned first-hand, with our own children, the miracle of the right therapy. Our goal is to make that blessing available to as many children as we are able. One Step at a Time Our vision will take time to implement and we are still in the early stages. However, we find the vision to be moving, and moving is what we are doing. We are working towards a fully functioning therapeutic farm. The farm would provide many services to help our young people learn valuable coping skills. Our goal is provide the facilities that local therapists can use to provide therapy to more children who would otherwise be unable to afford their care. Stage One This stage involves acquiring property, either raw land, or an operational farm. This stage also involves preparing the land for future stages and construction of a residence on the property. Our ability to provide services at this stage would be limited to small farming. Stage Two This stage involves construction of the accessible horse barn, chicken coops, pastures, riding ring, etc. when this stage is complete, we can begin offering expanded services that will enable the children to bond with the animals and receive equine therapy to help develop proper musculature. If you are interested in learning more, or you desire to help, please contact us via email. We would love to visit.
